The cell captive structure was pioneered in South Africa in 1993; today South Africa’s two largest cell captive insurers occupy the fourth and eighth spots respectively on the top ten list of local non-life insurers.
At the heart of the cell captive model is the specialised skill and capability needed to manage cell captives; and the significant resources required to invest in technology to take the business forward. Thus, the future belongs to those cell captive insurers that currently have, or will have, the resources and appetite to invest in the technology and skills needed to grow their business.
